Janet Haley

(Nurse Ratched, Flint Repertory Artistic Associate)

last appeared on stage here in 2019 as Beatrice in The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds and Amanda Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie. Janet is Associate Professor of Theatre (Acting/Directing) and Department Chair at The University of Michigan-Flint, specializing in physical approaches to actor training, directing, and ensemble theatre-making.  Janet is also an Artistic Associate with Michigan Shakespeare Festival, and for 14 seasons has played over 35 roles that run the spectrum of maids, mothers, madwomen, and magicians, including: Prospera/The Tempest,  Beatrice/Much Ado About Nothing, Portia/The Merchant of Venice, Gertrude/Hamlet, Olivia/Twelfth Night, Titania/A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Elizabeth/Richard III, Portia/Julius Caesar, Paulina/Winter’s Tale, Regan/King Lear, Arkadina/The Seagull, Bianca/The Taming of the Shrew, Mistress Quickly/The Merry Wives of Windsor. Janet received a Wilde Award for her portrayal of "Jaques" in MSF's 2016 production of As You Like It.  In 2018, Janet was seen on the Williamston Theatre stage, appearing in Our Lady of Poison, by Joseph Zettlemeier.  Janet has performed with Seattle Public Theatre, Book-It Rep in Seattle, Harlequin in Olympia WA, Idaho Repertory Theatre, Idaho Theatre for Youth, Boise Contemporary Theatre, Performance Network and Cornerstone Theater in Los Angeles. For Flint Youth Theatre, she’s directed several productions, including The Jungle Book and The Adventures of Huck Finn (both Wilde Award Nominees for Best TYA), and 9x Nourished at the Flint Farmers' Market (script by Michael Rohd). At The University of Michigan-Flint, Janet has directed 16 theatre productions, including Metamorphoses, Antigone, Cherry Orchard, As You Like It, Romeo & Juliet, Big Love, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Learned Ladies, My Children! My Africa!, and “Master Harold”…and the Boys, and The Glenwood Cemetery Site-Specific Theatre Project. Janet has trained in Viewpoints and Suzuki practices with SITI Company of NYC continuously for the past 15 years, as well as Pacific Performance Project/east,  and Peter Kyle Dance of NYC. Janet holds an MFA from The University of Texas at Austin, and is a proud member of Actors' Equity Association. Janet is a proud native of Flint, alumna and former resident artist with Flint Youth Theatre, and the Flint Public Schools.
